• Owner-drivers look set to benefit from the recent managment buyout of a Midlands transport firm.

Longton Storage and Transport—formerly Beacon Storage—of Stoke-on-Trent plans to take on more dedicated distribution business, says managing director Alan Harp.

The company, which runs four vehicles, specialises in warehousing of food, consumer goods and cardboard products.

Harp and his buyout partner Brian Riley have also bought Stockton Haulage, with depots in Middlesbrough, Stranraer and Larne.

Between them the two operations employ 100 people and have an annual turnover of £6m. They were bought from the Chelmsford-based Birch Group for around Lim.

Stockton Haulage is a road/rail operation specialising in moving goods to Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. "We are also looking to expand this business and there may be job opportunities here," says Harp.

7 The Ellesmere Port-based transport division of Van Leer (UK) has also been bought by a management team in a deal worth £1.2m.

The new company, to be known as Transmere Distribution, has branches in Hull, Caerphilly and Burton-onTrent.

It has a five-year contract to distribute Van Leer's industrial and consumer packaging products for customers in the food, chemical and oil industries throughout the EC.
