COMMERCIAL vehicle operators will be legally obliged to increase their third party insurance cover under a new EEC directive approved in Brussels and effective from 1988.
Under present British Regulations, third party insurance is legally required only in respect to personal injury.
The new directive makes it mandatory in all EEC countries to have third party cover in respect of material damage as well.
The directive also lays down EEC rules for dealing with damage caused by hit-and-run drivers and uninsured vehicles. Victims will be compensated from national funds held in each country.
Said an EEC spokesman: "This is another step towards the full harmonisation of the insurance market," The new directive on civil liability will be operating by December 31, 1988.
