• Continental's answer to the "just round the corner" technology of wide-single drive-axle tyres is the HDR 495/45 R 22.5 or SuSi. Already on the road in experimental form, the SuSi is expected to be production-ready by the end of 2002. After that it's a question of chassis manufacturers taking up the challenge and specifying the new tyre. with the first applications expected to be revealed early in 2003. The wide-singles promise reduced rolling resistance and a 160kg-per-axle weight saving, but the unresolved issue is of safety: specifically, how the need for deflation detection will be satisfied.
