Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Under the voluntary code of practice monitored by the Department of Transport, vehicle manufacturers inform the DTp of any recall campaigns they operate relating to safety related defects which are "liable to cause significant risk of injury to the driver, occupants of the vehicle or other road users".

The DTp publishes these recall campaigns in bulletins issued at sixmonthly intervals. The latest bulletin relates to recalls launched between July 1 and December 31 last year. Here we show all the goods vehicles and "LPV"(large passenger vehicles) included in that bulletin.

Goods vehicles

Model: Leyland Boxer.

Identification and build dates: Chassis numbers 407541 to 582000 from 1971 to 1981. 1971-1985: First five characters of VIN code SBBH4 and last seven characters in range AD00001 to MG04000. Defect: Inaccurate service information could result in handbrake mechanism being set incorrectly which would overload the rear hydraulic wheel cylinders and cause premature failure resulting in loss of service and parking brakes.

Remedial action: Recall to check all Boxer models and where the park brake linkage is found to be set incorrectly; this will be corrected and new wheel cylinders fitted.

Number of vehicles involved: 4,091, Model: Mercedes-Benz 2025S.

Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos: 164311 to 197762 from January 1985 to June 1985.

Defect: A modification to the stabiliser bracket may reduce the clearance between the bracket and steering drag link, with the possibility that the steering drag link may rub against the bracket.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to fit a different version drag link to prevent possible interference Number of vehicles involved: 45 Model: Leyland Freighter Identification and build dates: Al] chassis built with the first five digits of VIN code SBLH4 and last five numerics of chassis number in range 33982-43000 from 1984 to 1985.

Defect: Inadequate lubrication in the front axle hub bearings can result in JItuLdture failures of the bearings and potential loss of road wheels and hubs.

Remedial action: Vehicles to be checked for wear. If there is a deterioration, bearings and possible stub axles to be replaced. If no apparent wear then bearings are to be properly lubricated. Number of vehicles involved: 1,400. Model: Mercedes-Benz Unimog 424, 425 and 435.

Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos: 106497 to 109413 from November 1983 to November 1984, Defect: The secondary cylinder piston may not be in alignment with the brake booster operating rod which would reduce the braking efficiency.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to check production date and replace master cylinder as necessary.

Number of vehicles involved: 13. Model: Renault Master.

Identification and build dates: Chassis numbers various built 1986.

Defect: Loss of steering at low speed due to the steering box pinion bearing not being in place.

Remedial action: Check vehicles and replace steering rack and pinion if necessary.

Number of vehicles involved: 1,294. Model: Renault Dodge Commando 2. Identification and build dates: Chassis 'Nos: 715514 to 722912 from 1983 to June 24 1986.

Defect: Secondary brake system pipes connected incorrectly between dual and triple air tanks resulting in loss of secondary braking circuit.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to check pipe routeing and correct if necessary. Number of vehicles involved: 201. Model: Bedford Midi.

Identification and build dates: Chassis numbers FV604102 to IIV601426 from November 1984 to September 1986. Defect: Failure of stranded wire seat belt stalk due to fatigue.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to replace stranded wire seat belt with those of revised design.

Number of vehicles involved: 18,100. Model: ERF E and C. P. Series. Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos. various from October 1 1985 to July 22 1986.

Defect: Under torqueing of steering lever fasteners in production could result in loosening of the steering arm to stub axle.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to check and re-torque fasteners where necessary.

Number of vehicles involved: 1,268. Model: ERF E Series.

Identification and build dates: Chassis numbers various from April 1986 to August 1986.

Defect: Base plate distortion of the Bendix SP6 hand control valve may cause partial trailer brake application resulting in over heating of the brakes.

Remedial action: Replace hand control valves with quality assurance components. Number of vehicles involved: 525. Model: ERF E Series tractor units only. Identification and build dates: Chassis nos. various from April 1986 to September 1986.

Defect: An instance whereby the roof vent has become detached from handles due to faulty spot welding equipment used in production by supplier.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to have roof vent changed.

Number of vehicles involved: 500. Model: VAG (UK) LT28, LT31. — sixcylinder petrol engine.

Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos: 28DH00001 to 281111001604 and 29DH00001 to 29HH001604 from August 1982 to July 1986.

Defect: There is a possibility of fuel leaking from the carburettor top, resulting in a potential fire hazard.

Remedial action: Replace carburettor tops with modified type.

Number of vehicles involved: 6,953. Model: Mercedes-Benz LPS 1418. Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos. various from January 1974 to December 1974.

Defect: Operation of the exhaust brake causes partial application of the semitrailer brakes. In adverse conditions this could affect safe vehicle control and is now no longer acceptable.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles and remove trailer third brake link.

Number of vehicles involved: 313. Model: Seddon Atkinson 201 rigid, 201 Municipal, 301 4x2T and 6x2T, 401 4x2T and 6x2T.

Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos: 201 rigid from 79850 to 81426; 201

Municipal from 80016 to 81426 301 4x2T and 6x2T from 78828 to 81426; 401 4x2T and 6x2T from 79857 to 81426 all 1986.

Defect: Possible failure of two welds between the front axle brake camshaft tube and the mounting flanges, resulting in an unbalanced braking effort on the affected axles.

Remedial Action: Recall vehicles to weld camshaft tube to brake backplates. Number of vehicles involved: 700. Model: Bedford RascallSusuki Super Carry Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos GV600005 to FIV600101 from February to August 1986.

Defect: Cases have occurred where the threads of the steering rack attaching

bolts and captive nuts have been damaged during steering rack installation. This could result in the loosening of the steering rack, and eventual loss of steering control.

Remedial action: Replacement of paint clearing bolts with full thread bolts, following thread integrity check of captive nuts.

Number of vehicles involved: 4,300. Model: Mercedes-Benz Unimog 424. Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos up to 42412113108619 from 1975 to 1983.

Defect: The steering arm/knuckle arm may fail under extreme load conditions, resulting in loss of steering control. Remedial action: Recall vehicles and replace steering arm with modified components.

Number of vehicles involved: 115. Model: Dennis Eagle MD2418. Identification and build dates: Chassis Nos various from 1983 to 1984.

Defect: Possible cracking of the front road spring hanger bracket on vehicles with plated front axle weight of 6600kg. Complete failure could result in loss of control of vehicle.

Remedial action: Recall all affected vehicles and fit heavy duty spring hanger brackets.

Number of vehicles involved: 47. Model: Iveco Ford 190.30 and 190.38. Identification and build dates: Chassis numbers 18280 to 24874 from August 1985 to May 1986.

Defect: The Banjo bolts securing the air gauge pipes to the brake foot valve are fitted with alloy/rubber washers that are

too thick. Failure of the Banjo bolt would result in loss of air pressure and possible lock-up of the spring brakes.

Remedial action: Recall vehicles to replace bolts and fit copper washers. Number of vehicles involved: 325. Model: Foden S104, S106 and S108. Identification and build dates: Chassis numbers various between 212930 and 215084 from June 1984 to October 1986. Defect: It has been found that a number of steering bevel drive boxes have been supplied by Bendix in a dry condition instead of being packed with grease and this can lead to heavy steering.

Remedial action: Replace steering bevel drive box completely if found dry. Number of vehicles involved: 192.
