Ili As C'onnvercial Motor closed for press this week Leyland confirmed that managers at the doomed Scaininell plant are trying to set up a consortium to maintain some of the operations at the Watford factory and save the jobs of up to 100 workers.
By the Middle of next year all production of 'Scammell eight-wheelers, three-axle Roadtrains and military trucks will be transferred to Leyland's main assembly plant in Lancashire.
Vic Wilkes, currently managing director at Scammell, says that there is a possibility of setting up a small independent company which could exploit Scammell's existing special vehicle business.
Although few details have been released, a management-led team could carry on building Nubian fire tenders, and possibly even Landtrain export trucks which could be discontinued when Scammell production is switched to Leyland.
