Brian Hayward, 38, takes over on Monday as managing director of Southern British Road Services, in succession to J. D. Mather, now md of Tank freight Ltd, Mr Hayward joined BRS as a lorry driver almost 20 years ago; his career has included two years as manager of Pickfords Tank Haulage, and a spell as group transport manager of British Domestic Appliances, which merged with Hotpoint and Morphy Richards and integrated distribution functions into one common department. Between 1969 and 1972 Mr Hayward developed a transport business for Miles Druce Co Ltd, and returned to BDA as distribution director in 1972.

R. D. Hutchings, 55, succeeds C. R. Hodgson as chairman of the North Western Traffic Commissioners when Mr Hodgson retires on March 24, Mr Hutchings was a regular soldier for 25 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, and starting his Civil Service career in 1964, joining the

Ministry of Transport as a Principal three years later. He has had experience of vehicle safety regulations and regional economic planning, and for the past two years had been engaged in personnel management.

William Price, 42, traffic manager of the Northern Group of Companies, has been appointed general manager of Yorkshire Traction.

John I. Smith has been appointed managing director of Dennis Motors of Guildford. Mr Smith was previously md of Yorkshire Vehicles. Also moving to Dennis from within the Hestair Group is John E. Jackson, previously with Stanhay, who becomes sales director.

David Lucy has been appointed general manager of Shipping and Forwarding (London) Ltd, the newlyformed associated company of the S & F Group, Mr Lucy was sales manager with Anglo-European Container Line. Edward Baker, 36, becomes manager of the new Middlemore distribution centre of Midlands British Road Services. Mr Baker was previously operations manager with British Domestic Appliances.

Embrae M. Kennedy, 555, and Hugh M. Austin, 50, have been elected to the board of Vauxhall Motors. Mr Kennedy joined the company last December as director of engineering, commercial vehicles, having been chief engineer of General Motors South Africa (Pty) Ltd; Mr Austin, director of marketing, Bedford commercial vehicles, was regional manager — Europe, GM Overseas Corporation, until his present appointment last year.

Arthur Brook, chief engineer (group transport) of the Calor Group Ltd, has retired after 28 years with the group. He was responsible for buying all passenger transport vehicles in the group, and tl specification and purchase much of Calor's 700-stro transport fleet, including LF vehicles. He spent all working life in transpo working with firms Huddersfield, Leeds a Manchester before joini Calor.

Walter Dixon is retiring at t end of March after compil ing 54 years with the Ro Haulage Association and c of its predecessors. Mr Dix secretary of the North Lan( shire sub-area of the RH) North Western (Easte area. He began as Prest area secretary in the No Western division of I Commercial Motor Us, Association.

Mr Bancroft, 81, was a se retired haulier in Coalvi Leics, who had founded own business, which ever ally became Bancroft Powers Ltd, and opera both lorries and coaches. Mr Childs, who lived Mansfield, Notts, was v known in the tyre distribui trade; he was president of NTDA in 1960.
