A T ABERDEEN last week, the Scottish deputy Licensing Authority, Mr, A. B. Birnie, reserved his decision on two applications for A licences which were both supported by the same haulier who wished to sub-contract the work he could not handle.

Mr. G. T. Fraser, of Aberdeen, whose principal haulage business was in local fish traffic, applied to consolidate four A licences authorizing seven vehicles into one licence with a normal user of: Gods within 60 miles. Fish and fish trade requisites within Scotland, with extension to Hull. Cirimsby, Shields, Fleetwood and Melton Mowbray. Goods for Bray Bros. of Sauchen as required. Goods subcontracted on behalf of Inverdon Transport Co. Ltd., Nigg, Aberdeen, as required. The applicant said he had been warned by letter from the L.A.'s office that he was operating outside his normal user to a great extent for the haulage of meat and poultry and he wished to put this in order. This traffic, said Mr. Fraser, had been carried on behalf of Inverdon Transport and was becoming a regular feature.

The managing director of a local fish businesS spoke of new traffic in sprats. When they appeared in abundance in coastal waters there was seldom enough vehicles to shift them, he said.

The director added that he had known boats to come from the Continent to pick up surplus sprats which could not be moved and therefore traffic was being lost to this country.

The Inverdon transport manager said he had sub-contracted a lot of traffic to the applicant; he felt this would continue and could be increased if the extension applied for was granted. Inverdon Transport dealt in the haulage of meat and poultry and operated four A-licensed vehicles and four contract vehicles.

• The 'second application, by Mr. W. • French of Fraserburgh for one vehicle on A licence subject to the surrender of his existing A licence authorizing the same vehicle, was made to change the normal user to read: Agricultural goods and requisites; fish and fish trade requisites. within Scotland, with extension for fish and fish trade requisites to East coast ports of England. Meat and poultry from Aberdeenshire and Banffshire to London area, south of England and South Wales.

Mr. French said he had been warned regarding his declaration of normal user and wanted to put things right. His application was also supported by Inverdon Transport, who had sub-contracted traffic in meat and poultry to him.
