TUESDAY'S special meeting of the I licensing committee of the Road Haulage Association in London was inconclusive. The weather greatly curtailed attendance. Another meeting will be held on March 19.

The purpose of Tuesday's meeting was to consider the continuation of special A licences as ordinary A licences, the question of normal user and the effect of Section 9(4) of the Transport Act, 1953.

A resolution expressing grave apprehension about the future of licensing was submitted by the West Midland Area. The committee thought that the West Midland Area's anxiety was greater than that exhibited elsewhere.

THREE members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers have been elected to senior positions in the newly formed British Group for the Engineering Applications of Automation. They are Dr. D. F. Galloway (chairman), Mr. J. S. Brough (vice-chairman) and Mr. Brian G. Rqbbins (secretary). TheInstitution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institute of Materials Handling are among 21 organizations who have joined the group, which forms part of the British Conference on Automation and Computation. Their object will be to foster the development of the engineering applications of automation.

WARNING SIGN FOR LORRIES 'WHEN Scotchlite reflective signs were VV demonstrated at Welwyn Garden City last week, a red triangle which is intended for use by heavy lorries was shown. The sign can be carried folded but may be quickly erected. If a driver stops his vehicle on the open road it is proposed that he should place the sign 25 yd, behind it as a warning to other traffic.

Another red triangle sign bore the words "Danger Accident," and was intended for use by the police to prevent multiple collisions at night.

FRENCH CUT ROAD SPENDING

EXPENDITURE on French roads has this year been reduced to f84m., compared with £128m. last year. Work on several arterial roads has been postponed. It is proposed, however, to float public loans to pay for road -works. The loans would be repaid by tolls.

DIRECTORS RESIGN

TWO directors of Park Royal Vehicles, Ltd., Sir Joseph Napier and Mr. Herbert C. B. Berens, resigned on Tuesday.
