Pl.A WARNING about the wording. of licence conditions relating to opencast coal was given at Newcastle upon Tyne, last week, by Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, Northern Licensing Authority. He said there would probably soon be a tightening-up.

"In the past, licences have been worded in such a way that it has been possible to pick up coal from an opencast site in this area and transport it anywhere," he declared. The licences had been intended to cover carriage of opencast coal in the Northern Area only.

Mr. J. L. R. Croft remarked: "A report is coming to your office which might make it necessary for you to consider amending the wording of the conditions even more so."

For the Road Haulage Association, Mr. F. Milton said his Association would give the Authority their full co-operation. He knew that, except in national emergencies, coal should be carried only in the Northern Area. .

Mr. Hanlon's observations followed an application by Mr. W. H. •Handyside, Seaton Burn, who wanted a short-term B licence to cover a heavy tipper on opencast work.

MORE WANT BUS JOBS A MARKED increase in recruitment is EA being experienced by Leicester Transport Department. For some years they have been losing bus crews to higherpaid industries, but the trend in the reverse direction follows a recession in trade, particularly the shoe trade.

When the corporation advertised a vacancy foca fitter recently they had 80 applications, compared with none for a similar position a year ago.
