Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Guy Sheppard Nearly 50 Christian Salvesen drivers are poised to cripple one of Tesco's main distribution centres in a strike over pay.

Sunday's (24 August) 24hour stoppage plus an overtime ban starting at midnight tonight (28 August) will hit Salvesen's multi-user cold storage depot in Easton, Lincolnshire.

A final meeting to avert the action was being held as CM went to press but Geoff Espin, Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) regional organiser, says: "It looks as though industrial action is the only way to forward this claim.

"Drivers are currently on £5.91 an hour and &though there is a whole package surrounding that, we know that most other Salvesen drivers are paid significantly more."

He adds that more stoppages are expected after Sunday, and third-party opera

tors will be expected not to cross picket lines.

Salvesen's original offer to drivers and fitters at the depot was rejected after the union claimed it would have been financed from meal allowances, reduced holiday pay and more weekend work to reduce the need for agency and subcontracted drivers.

Espin says the new deal was worth about 8%, but half of this was still self-financing, and nearly 95% of the employees voted to reject it.

A Salvesen spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter as CMwent to press.
