Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A FTER examining figures made avail1-1. able by Scotland Yard on Wednesday relating to lorry thefts in the Metropolitan area in the second quarter of this year, a warning was given by Mr. J. T. Brown, chairman of the Road Haulage Association's vehicles security committee. Mr. 'Brown said that goods vehicle owners outside the Metropolitan area would be well advised to redouble their security precautions; in this way they would discourage the unwelcome attention of the lorry thieves who were finding the streets of London less and less rewarding.

Both the number of cases of vehicle thefts and the value of goods stolen have dropped as compared with the same period in 1963 and the value has fallen consistently over the past four years, although the number of thefts has fluctuated. In the third quarter of 1961 thieves took 1234,000 from 1,000 vehicles. In 1964 they had to find 1,111 vehicles in order to get £158,000.

The vehicles security committee, on which are represented British Road Services, British Railways, traders carrying their own traffic, Scotland Yard and insurance interests as well as hauliers. will be meeting shortly to prepare the winter offensive against the lorry thief.
