A FORMER MECHANIC at logistics giant Exel is seeking compensation for constructive dismissal, claiming he was forced to leave after telling a customer about plans to steal a truck-load of goods.
Lee Jones from Birmingham had been transferred from Pullman Fleet Services to Exel at the same Tamworth site, a Birmingham employment tribunal was told. He had been employed at the site for four years.
Jones said he was told about plans to steal a truck and its contents belonging to supermarket chain Morrisons. "The person behind the planned theft offered a mechanic £500 to change the identity of a Morrisons truck to enable the theft to go ahead," he said.
"But the mechanic refused to co-operate and the theft did not take place. Although the management had been informed no investigation appeared to have been carried out and I became concerned about it sent a letter to Morrisons informing them about the attempted theft because I believed there had been a cover up."
Jones said he was revealed as the author of the letter; he claimed Exel was annoyed over a breach of confidentiality. He alleged the firm then pressured him with a series of minor incidents which forced him to resign in June last year.Th e firm disputes Jones' version of events.
