Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Prices, CM September 6. Users of oil, especially road hauliers, must surely feel that they are being exploited. Oil companies know their products are indispensable and cannot be economised upon for all vehicles will still require the same quantity of diesel for their journeys, regardless of price.

All very well if you are an oil company or the government — they really must be laughing all the way to the bank! Not so the unfortunate general haulier who is expected to remain fully competitive and just accept all increases that happen to come his way regardless of what work he has available.

Is it really any wonder that haulage companies were third on the list of business failures in 1985, according to a recent survey? All things considered, it is more of a wonder that they were not first! Surely it would make sense now that the cost of DERV is so high for the government to either re'move VAT from the product or cut DERV tax drastically.

I am sure all hauliers know that having to pay VAT on tax is absolutely absurd and it seems management just cannot win. Oil companies and the government have the cake and eat it; poor sad hauliers are lucky to be left with a few of the crumbs. Talk about being efficient these days. . . .
