Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Workshops are benefiting from the raising of standards, the accent on quality and the general advancement of truck technology. There may be a dearth of skilled fitters at present but advancement in the technology applied to trucks should attract the school leaver to our industry as it moves closer to the aerospace and aviation worlds.

Therefore, we should welcome the benefits that electronic diagnostic aids can bring. VCM can give advance warning of impending situations and is, therefore, a form of advanced onboard diagnostics. Such systems are being developed, but the engineer who over-specifies his requirements could find that a plethora of data is actually self defeating and not cost-effective.

The 21st Century is barely a decade away. We will see tremendous advances in the use of electronics, that's for sure. DAVIE offboard diagnostic systems will become familiar in the workshop and VCM will have a role to play, both systems complementing each other.
