Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

REIGHT handlers at the ,irmingham and Leeds conainer bases are seeking ocker status and have lodged 'aims for equal pay with the andlers at the Barking Continerbase.

This week a Containerbase ompany spokesman would nly say that the situation was ery complex. "It's early days et," he said.

Despite the fact that neither Ise is related in any way to a )rt, the men are asking the )mpany to apply to the near;t port to get them registered ; dockers.

The handlers decided to ke their action because there no legislation that would v e made them dockers itomatically since the defeat clauses in the Dock Work 3gulation Act which would we decreed that they were )ckers.

Now the 120 men involved the action fall outside the corridor inside which I cargo handling work would we had to be done by ockers.

But so far there have been o applications from men at e Manchester and Coatidge bases.

The men are members of the .ansport and General orkers Union and they are ied to the road haulage side the union at present.

Containerbase group maging director John Reid s written to TGWU general cretary Moss Evans to .rify the whole situation inlying the men and manning rels at the bases.

3ut men at all four inland rttainer bases have lodged a im for parity with the Barig men, who are registered dock workers, under Schele 11 of the Employment Dtection Act — but this ,uld contravene the five per it pay guideline.

f the men are successful in ir claim to be registered as kers, then it could set a ?.cedent for many of the mtry's inland bases where ight is handled — and that ild mean a return of the eat to the future of lorry vers using the ports and itainer depots.
