Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BRITISH buses are taking on a transatlantic look, with pneumatic bumpers being specified experimentally by three urban operators.

Tyne and Wear and Greater Glasgow PTEs, as well as City of Nottingham Transport, have chosen Firestone HELP (high energy level pneumatic) bumpers for some of their Leyland Atlantean doubledeckers.

They are similar to HELP front and rear assemblies which are in use in over 100 urban fleets in the United States.

Under impact, air exhausts through four cross-slit valves on the bumper. A momentary vacuum follows to reduce rebound, and the bumper then "Inhales" again to become ready for another impact.

Firestone claims it crash tested a bus at 30.7 mph by driving it into the rear of a car. Neither bus nor bumper was damaged. The first three of the T: and Wear vehicles are alre in service with bumpers wli were imported from the U and the Nottingham HE Atlantean is being displa: on the Northern Count stand (380) at NEC.
