Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

KNOW T

SUSPENSION, 2

When a beam axle is used, the rise of one wheel, as it travels over a bump in the road, causes the other wheel on the axle tilt through an angle, the magnitude of which depends on the height to which the wheel on the other side has risen (see Fig 1).

This is obviously undesirable and may cause steering wobble. With independent suspension, each wheel is permitted to rise and fall without affecting the other wheel in any way. Additionally, the unsprung parts are lighter than in the beam-axle type of suspension, which give' improved riding qualities.

One of the most popular types of independent front suspension is the wishbone transverse link system illustrated in Fig 2. Two links, made in wishbone shape, are used to provide Fig 3 shows the main deta of the McPherson strut-ty suspension where a telescor tube connects the stub axle the frame of the vehicle. A c spring is fitted between the fix and moving portion of the tut A single transverse link cc nects the lower end of the St to the frame of the vehicle retain the wheel in track, T two lower links are connected a stabiliser bar which prey& the struts from moving forwal or backwards.

. The trailing arm-type of s pension, shown diagramatici in Fig 4, is used extensively independent rear suspensi, The spring may be a helical 1 or air or rubber. A simple trail arm cannot deal with the si ways forces present when, example, a vehicle is cornerir In some cases the arr-r made of a shape similar to wishbone type already scribed for front suspens systems. The arm is connec to the frame by two bearir wide enough apart to give necessary stiffness to the an deal with the sideway forces other cases a transverse ra■ rod secures the axle to the fo so that sideways movemer prevented. These rods sometimes called -Panh rods-.

Dampers, or to use tl popular name, shock absorb have not been considered in article but will be dealt s, later.
