COMMENTS on what was described as a lack of solidarity among operators doing road haulage work for Bradford Corporation were made at a recent meeting of the transport section of the Bradford and District Chamber of Trade.
The rates which the Section had asked for, on an hourly basis according to the carrying capacity of the vehicle, were:—Not exceeding 30 cwt., 5s. 2d.; over 30 cwt. and not exceeding 2 tons, 6s. 2d.; over 2 tons and not exceeding 3 tons, 7s.
A letter from the corporation indicated that the Section's repeated re4u7st for payment of these rates had been considered at a meeting of representatives of municipal committees interested in the hire of vehicles. This meeting had reaffirmed the previous decision to grant only part of the increases asked for, by the introduction of the following rates:-30 cwt. to 2 tons inclusive, 5s. per hour; exceed
ing 2 tuns but not exceeding 3 tons, 5s. Bd. per hour; with a proviso that payment terms for vehicles of more than 3 tons capacity be negotiated by the department hiring them.
The municipal representatives also rejected the Section's application for an extra Is. per hour per vehicle as black-out pay, in cases where vehicles were employed between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Although strong dissatisfaction at the corporation's reply was voiced, the Section decided that, in view of the passive attitude of many of the operators concerned, it would accept the terms under protest, subject to further representations on the classification of 2-tonners in the municipality's new scale. The placing of such vehicles in the same rate _category as 30-cwt. vehicles was describedas unfair, in that it would mean that the rate for the larger type /would be decreased. '
