Steam Wagons Wanted in Cairo.

THE British Commercial Secretary

• at Cairo reports that the Ministry of Public Works, Cairo, is calling for tenders, which have to be presented in Egypt by December 15th, for the supply of three steam wagons. Those concerns which can offer British products can obtain further particulars of the requirements of the Ministry from the Department of Overseas Trade, 35, Ohl Queen Street, London, SAVA, reference AX.7149 being quoted.

Canada's Growing Export Trade.

STEADY progress continues to be made in the export of commercial vehicles from Canada. During August last no fewer than 3,026 vehicles, valued at £215,611, were shipped from

the Dominion, as against 1,614 in the corresponding month of 1927. The total for the first eight months of the present year is 12,363 vehicles of a value of £887,579. As will be gathered, the bulk of the vehicles are of a light, low-price class, the average declared value being less than £70 per vehicle. At the present time the principal markets for Canadian machine's are India, West and East Africa, Australia, Chile, Venezuela and Roumania.

AS indicating the progress which

certain prominent British manufacturers are making overseas it is most interesting to learn that Leyland Motors, Ltd., Wellesley Place, Calcutta, has recently received a contract for 21 Leyland 5-6-ton conservancy vehicles with steel bodies from the corporation of Calcutta.

100,000 Motors in India.

HIS MAJESTY'S Senior Trade Commissioner in India reports that 7,535 motorcars, 292 motorbuses, 337 motor lorries, and 28 tractors were

registered in Madras City on June 30th last. On the same date registrations for the Madras Presidency totalled 4,060 cars, 1,137 buses, 428 lorries and 9 tractors. The number of motor vehicles registered in British India on March 31st last was,' 102,692 cars, inchiding taxicabs, and 19,008 heavy motor vehicles.

On Municipal Work in Aden.

THE Aden Settlement has bought a

number of Albion vehicles during recent years, and the vehicle which forms the subject of the accompanying• illustrations is a special 85-55 h.p. forward-control end-tipper, supplied to its sanitary department for garb-age work. The vehicle is noticeable for the fact that the petrol tank is carried inside

the cab behind the driver's seat, access to it for the purpose of fuel replenishment being obtained_ through a small door situated high up on the side of the cab.

Four sliding covers are fitted at the top of the body; Whilst the rear is enclosed by doors hinged from the sides. The body is• built of steel plates throughout and the floor is perfectly level, thus facilitating the work of emptying the contents of the body.

ONE of the most successful ex hibitions of agricultural implements ever held in Victoria took place recently at Wimmera, one,of the best known wheat-growing districts of the country. Great interest was shown by farmers in the modern farm tractor, the popularity of which is rapidly increasing in Australia. Scrub clearing, ploughing, seed drilling and harvesting—typical of the field tasks carried out on most Australian farms—are being performed economically by the use of tractors.

Various machines were demonstrated on a rich black soil, which was typical of the soil found on the average Wirnmera farm. Practically all the tractors displayed were of American manufacture, with the exception of the Avance, manufactured in Sweden ; the VickerS, a British machine, and the Ronald-TiPpett. The last-named is asserted to be 85 per cent. Australian manufacture.

Second-hand Vehicles in Australia. DURING the past few months several

meetings have been held in Sydney, New South Wales, of distributors of British heavy commercial vehicles with a • view to the adoption -of a proposed scheme whereby they :might ;agree to limit discounts and otherwise . protect their own interests by avoiding excessive prices for traded-in vehicles. It is hoped that, in due ceurse," ccincerted action will be adopted on these lines..

Germany's Growing Foreign Trade. GERMANY'S foreign trade in industrial motor vehicles has witnessed a marked expansion during the present year. The. latest returns are those for August last, during which month 370 vehicles, valued at £130,800, were exported from Germany, bringing the total shipments for the first eight months of the year up to no fewer' than 2,285' machines.
