MAGIRUS Deutz parts in the new 5.6 and 7.5-tonne light range, (CM, May 20) are not necessarily interchangeable with those fitted to similar Fiat vehicles, their Iveto partners. The warning was given last week by Magirus managing director, Frank Tinsdale when the new range was launched at Douglas on the Isle of Man.

Mr Tinsdale told about 100 dealers that although 70 per cent of the new vehicles were Fiat, they should check that whether any part in the other 30 per cent a Fiat equivalent would replace an original equipment Magirus part.

• The Magirus dealers criticised their Fiat counterparts for employing undercutting tactics to secure orders. In some cases, it was reported, up to 171/2 per cent discount was being offered. One Magirus dealer claimed his Fiat neighbour was selling at two and a half per cent less than he, the Magirus man could buy at.

Mr Tinsdale also warned the dealers that their traditional heavy market should not be neglected in favour of the new lightweights. He claimed that the optional extras offered by other manufacturers were standard equipment on the light Magirus.

Brade-Leigh of West Bromwich and CF Rigids of Basildon, Essex, have been appointed official main stockists and bodybuilders for the range.

Brade-Leigh will build platform and tipper bodies. CF boxvans, Lutons and "reefers" Other bodybuilders will be permitted to build on the chassis cab but strictly to Magirus Deutz specification.

The bodybuilder stocking arrangement is described as the Magibank. CF claims that its boxvans and Lutons give a payload of around 4.5 tons on the 7.5 ton chassis and a 3.5 ton to reefer load.
