A STRENGTH requirement has been added to the Government's sideguard proposals, which are intended to increase the appeal of heavier lorries.
Industry's views are now being sought on the possibility of guards being designed to withstand, without permanent deformation, a force of 10 kiloNewtons applied to any part of their surface.
Talks are also to be held with EEC Governments to establish their view about harmonisation of sideguards throughout Europe.
The Department of Transport says that, as sideguards will beco me compulsory on new trailers of 3.5 to 32.5 tonnes earlier than on rigid vehicles (manufactured on or after April 1 next year, as opposed to October 1, 1983) the industry's problems with trailer guards will be given its first consideration.
