To add possible injury to idiocy the culprits were unaware that owner Colin Dawson, had removed the van's brake pads to replace them, while he left his show-off Sherpa parked outside his home in York.
"The brake pads were in my wife's handbag," says Dawson. Where else?
Small wonder then, that the van was found nearby standing on its nose in a ditch on a tight bend.
No doubt the thieves crawled away in a purple haze.
