E. G. Hardy, 63. chief maintenance engineer of the National Bus Company, has been appointed chief engineer as from July 1 in succession to S. C. Vince who has reached normal retirement age. Mr. Vince will be engaged on special engineering duties within the NBC organization during the next six months prior to his retirement on December 31, 1969. In 1945, Mr. Hardy became assistant engineer to the Bristol Omnibus Co. Ltd. and was promoted chief engineer in 1948, a position he held until his appointment as group engineer to the Tilling Group in 1965.

G. E. Papworth, staff officer, BRS Parcels Ltd., has been appointed personnel officer-designate, National Freight Federation Ltd., to succeed P. J. Brett who is to join the National Bus Company as industrial relations officer on Sep tember 1.

Ronald Brewer, 36, has been appointed principal executive assistant in London Transport's planning office. His responsibilities include securing adequate provision for buses in schemes for traffic management, road reconstruction and urban renewal; the development of bus priorities, bus-rail interchange and station car parks: and matters arising from local transportation studies and from the deliberations at the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for London.

W. Martin-Hurst will be retiring from his post as managing director of the Rover Co. Ltd. next October 1, but will continue as consultant engineering director. He will be succeeded as managing director by A. B. Smith, who is at present director and general manager. B. G. L. Jackman, director and deputy general manager, will become director and general manager. R. T. Knowles, who is sales director of MetroCammell-Weymann Ltd.. has been appointed group marketing and planning controller of the parent company, Cammell Laird (Metro) Ltd. He will be responsible for the marketing and planning of all the group's companies: Metro-Cammell Ltd. (railway rolling stock), Metro-Cammell Containers Ltd., Metro-Cammel I Engineers Ltd.. (general fabrications) and Metro-Cammell-Weymann Ltd., (buses), Mr. Knowles remains a director of the latter company.

S. B. Holliwell and J. E. Walker, of MetroCartimell-Weyman n Ltd. have been appointed assistant managing directors of Ca mmell Laird (Metro) Ltd. W. E. Hicks has been appointed general manager of Metro-Cammell-Weymann Ltd. in succession to Mr. Holliwell and J. E. Walker has been appointed to the board.

H. S. Douglas has been re-elected national chairman of the ITA. Mr. Douglas is one of the IA's representatives on the Transport Managers' Licence Committee. He is northern area transport manager of Proctor and Gamble Ltd.

James S. Mack, who has been appointed traffic manager with Western SMT Co. Ltd.. Kilmamock. joined the company in 1966 from Scottish Omnibuses Ltd. as assistant to the traffic manager. Douglas Richards has been elected president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers in succession to Sir George Harriman, who becomes deputy president. Mr. Richards, SMMT vice-president since 1964, is chairman of the Zenith Carburetter Company. Elected SMMT vice-presidents: K. S. F. Corley, vice-chairman, Joseph Lucas Industries; D. L. Hegland, chairman and managing director, Vauxhall Motors: M. I. Prichard, chairman and managing director. Perkins Engine Group. M. L. Breeden, joint managing director of Wilmot Breeden. has been elected honorary treasurer for the tenth successive year. Sir George Farmer, chairman of the Rover Company. has been re-appointed chairman of the SM MT's executive committee.

Ernest Sherratt, engineering director for ERF Ltd., retired last Saturday— his 65th birthday. Mr. Sherratt retains his position as director and deputy chairman of ERF (Holdings) Ltd. He joined the company when it first started as E. R. Foden and Son in 1933, and has played a major part in the design of every ERF vehicle built since the first one took to the road.

M. G. Trestrail has been appointed Press and public relations officer for CAV Ltd.

B. G. Stacey, formerly managing director of Dennis Bros. Ltd., has been appointed a director and general manager designate of Willowbrook Ltd., a Duple Group company. Mr. Stacey will take up his duties on August 1.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the deaths of Robert Clifford and John Fowler.

Mr. Clifford, 63, a haulage contractor of Seaham, Co. Durham, was former chairman of the Northern Area of the RHA. He was vice-chairman of the RHA's national executive and a member of the Road Haulage Wages Council employers' panel.

Mr. Fowler, 42. was transport manager of Riker Laboratories Ltd.. Loughborough, Leics.
