CIVE private coach operators were last
week refused permission to operate services between Bristol and the Royal Show ground between July 1 and 4. All the traffic will now be carried by the Bristol Omnibus Co., Ltd., who objected to their applications.
The private operators were E. Kear, Bristol; A. Birchill, Staple Hill; Bristol Co-operative Society, Ltd.; G. Feltham and Sons, Kingswood; and Wessex • Coaches. Ltd., Clifton. On their behalf, Mr. S. G. Bellamy said private Operators had been allowed to run services at previous shows in the area. Bristol Omnibus said they could handle the traffic, but their knowledge of the requirements was limited.
. Mr. T. D. Corpe, for Bristol Omnibus, said conditions had changed since pre-war days. The company had ample buses to meet the demand—in fact, there were 200 vehicles standing idle every day, so they were looking for work.
Mr. S. W. Nelson, chairman of the Western Traffic Commissioners, said: "It is our duty, as well as the Bristol Omnibus Company's, to see that there is no falldown in the services for this very important show." It was clear, he added. that the big company would be able to organize transport properly.
Five companies who wanted to run trips to the show from poi* outside the city had their applications granted. They were Mendip Queen Coaches. Ltd., Bristol: E. W. Gould. Shepton Mallet: W. Herring and Son, Ltd.. Burnham-on-Sea; Norman Coaches, Keynsham; and 0. G. A. Lyons. Rlaydon.
