THERE were 124 starters on Sunday I at Manchester's first eliminating contest in the Lorry Driver of the Year competition. The organizers; Manchester Public Safety Committee, assisted by the Kemsley House, Simon-Carves and Lancashire and Cheshire car clubs. must be congratulated on their efficient handling of the competitors, who were kept well up to the time schedules allotted.

The only criticism that could be levelled was the absence of information concerning results until the actual time of the presentations by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Ald. .1 E. Fitzsimons. The usual practice of displaying class winners' names on a blackboard was conspicuous by its absence.

At the end of the day, the outright winner was driver J. Kenworthy of the Crown Bedding Co., Ltd., Manchester.

who handled an Albion pantechnicon with copy-book precision to take• the Manchester Evening Chronicle trophy for first place, and the class award for vehicles over 25 ft. long.

The Crown Bedding Co. had a second success with driver C. Dawson, who won the Class D award and the Road Haulage Association trophy in another Albion.

British Road Services, Ltd., whose vehicles were, as usual, exceptionally well turned out, also had two successes. B.R.S. (Contracts), Ltd., came first in Class A with driver P. Broadbent in an Austin; and B.R.S., Ltd., Warrington Branch, first in Class F2 with driver J. Armitage in a Leyland.

Wilson's Brewery, Ltd., Manchester, with drivers H. Eden, W. Young and J. Brawley, were awarded a certificate for the best team performance.

Although the Manchester City Football Club's ear park in Maine Road was not an ideal testing site the manceuvrability test marking barriers were well laid out and here test three—reversing into a loading bayseetned to hold most diffi culties for the competitors, . although Many drivers performed indifferently in the parking test. The standard as a whole., however, was good. .
