United they stand

• United Carriers have been given a contract for the national distribution of Lotus shoes to retail outlets and stockists. Collection from the main Lotus depot at Stafford will be made from United's West Midland depot at Walsall Wood, using 40ft trailers.

More in wagons

• British Rail said this week that its traffic in privately owned wagons now exceeded 30m tons a year and would double over the next five years.

Auto signals for Glos

• Computer controlled signals came into use on Wednesday (July 25) on 50 miles of M5 between the junction with M50 (Ross Spur) and Avonmouth, and on four miles of M4 between Almondsbury and Aust.

Leaflets describing the signals are available from M5 service areas, the Aust area on M4 or the local police.

Humber roads safe

• There will be no cutback in the trunk road programme for Humberside, promised the Minister for Transport Industries on Monday when he unveiled a plaque to commemorate the start of work on the Humber Bridge, due for opening in 1977.

Reliant parts

• Reliant Motor Co Ltd has opened a new spares warehouse at Shenstone. Staffs, carrying 9000 lines. It will service Reliant's newly organized distribution network.

Sandbach double

• The annual general meetings of ERF Ltd and Fodens Ltd, both of Sandbach, will both be held on August 15. As already recorded in CM, ERF made a net profit of £921,306 before tax, on sales of £15.8rn in 1972-3. while Fodens made a net profit of £924,000 on a turnover of £17.3m.

ERF's annual report reveals that production has been held back by failure of the British Steel Corporation to meet demand. Production capacity is the only reason, says the report, why more vehicles have not been sent to the Continent — a market which is "a major factor in our future development".

New training year

• The Road Transport Industry Training Board has sent its employers' guide to the training grants scheme for 1973-74 to inscope companies.

It has also made available to both inscope and selected out-of-scope companies a new publication setting out details of courses at Motec during 1973-74.

There is no innovation in either, says the RTITB, and in-scope companies will already be aware of the grants available for the period.
