Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 2.5 Mazda B-Series
It may not be the most advanced contender in the category, but it's a highly competent workhorse.
Next on our 'highly commended' list is Jeep's Cherokee Pioneer. Given its history it would be foolish to question this company's off-road credentials, but the Cherokee Pioneer's on-road behaviour is equally impressive with a strong engine and car-like handling. Being derived from a passenger vehicle it's also a nice place to be and comes with all mod cons, though is a bit thirsty, Moving up the ladder and also gaining respect for its road manners is Isuzuls Rodeo, Gone is the wallowy ride that blights many pickups, as is the traditional elastic driveline. Powered by a smooth and powerful 3.0-litre engine it offers a fuss-free drive, while off-road it impresses with strong traction and decent build quality. The double-cab option enhances its versatility.
But overall it's the Defender-esque Santana PS10 that takes this year's honours.
Granted, it might not feel as refined on the road as some of the competition. But take it off road and it comes to life — and we're not just talking about on gravel paths. The PS10 can take a real hammering on any surface and come back for more. Rocks, tree stumps and the like are tackled with aplomb and, with room for all your gear, it can go where others fear to tread, while its parabolic springs cleverly provide as much comfort as coil springs.
