THE EU remains adamant that its August 2005 deadline for fitting smartcard digital tachographs will be met, despite widespread calls for the legislation to be delayed.

The original 5 August 2004 deadline for smartcard tachographs was delayed last March after it became clear that the industry could not meet it. But the Freight Ransport and Road Haulage Associations want a further delay in response to the lack of type approval for smartcard tachographs.

FTA EU affairs manager Damian Viccars says:"We would like to see a more flexible timetable with the tachographs fitted into new vehicles as soon as the equipment is finally ready and not in other vehicles until August 2007.This will ensure that there is sufficient time for driver training when the new equipment is available."

But Les Bishop, MAN ERF UK's product manager for heavyrange vehicles, says: "While we understand and sympathise with the trade associations' concern for their members, we can state that MAN ERF UK is certainly making steady progress towards the legislation deadline requirements, and will deliver the necessary hardware when it is needed.

"Of more concern is whether the legislative infrastructure for smart cards will be sufficiently advanced at the critical times."
