HANDS (LETCHWORTH), LTD., the trailer manufacturer, has been acquired by Gloster Aircraft Co., Ltd., a member of the Hawker Siddeley Group. Mr. Howard G. Hands is continuing as thanaging director.

Gloster Aircraft Co. have a controlling interest in Alfred Miles, Ltd., coachbuilders, and commenting on this latest acquisition, Mr. Shambrook, Gloster's general manager, said: "The products of Miles and Hands are complementary to one another and I am sure that this move will strengthen our position in the commercial vehicle field."

HIRE-PURCHASE CHANGES

VANS and light trucks with a payload capacity of less than 30-cwt. and passenger vehicles constructed to carry less than 12 persons are included in the recent Government Order announcing changes in hire-purchase and credit sale agreements. These vehicles, and also dumpers and parts thereof, including chassis, may now be paid for on hirepurchase over a period of three years, instead of two.

FORTY-NINE DAYS AT 53 M.P.H. A FRENCH Berliet Randonae underfloor-engined coach covered 62.000 miles in the 49 days from November 21, last, to January 9, thus giving an average speed for the complete distance of 53 m.p.h. This feat was cattied out on the French Miramas race track and was officially observed by the Automobile Club de France. Nine drivers participated and no mechanical replacements were needed during the run. The coach chosen had been exhibited on the Berliet stand at the Paris Motor Show in October.

B.R.S. CALL-OUTS TO COST MORE MERGENCY call-out payment for B.R.S. maintenance and repair grades has bean increased the Transport and General Workers Union has announced. Week-day payments will be at timeand-a-hatf (3-hour minimum); second call-outs to be paid similarly plus all intervening time between the calls; double time will be paid after 5 p.m. on Saturdays; Sundays will merit double time and a 51-hour minimum.
