We record with regret the deaths of Roger Gresham Cooke and George Burgess.

Mr. Gresham Cooke, 63, Conservative MP for Twickenham since 1955, throughout his Parliamentary life fought for better roads. Mr Gresham Cooke was called to the Bar in 1930, practising until he entered industry as secretary, British Road Federation 193538—he was chairman of its • highways committee 1948-55: from 1946-55 he was director. Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders; and founder council member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. He was joint secretary of the Conservative Parliamentary Transport Committee 1955-58; he never held Government office but in 1957-58 was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Mr Nigel Birch who was then Economic Secretary to the Treasury. Mr Gresham Cooke was president, Institute of Road Transport Engineers 1962-64; and in 1964 he chaired Commercial Motor's first Fleet Management conference, the success of which set the pattern for the series. He was a director of Rootes, and of Kerry Group.

Mr Burgess, 75. started in haulage in 1922 and had carried on busines in Westerham, Kent ever since, as G. Burgess, Haulage Contractor. The business is to continue. His son, Mr 0. G. Burgess, carries on his own business, G. Burgess and Son, at Westerham.
