George A. Bartup, 50. managing director of Trevor Williams (Removers) Ltd, Hereford, is to be installed as president of the National Association of Furniture Warehousemen and Removers at the association's conference on May 12. He will succeed Gordon Steele (Martens of Sutton Ltd). Having a keen interest in the problems of removals costings, Mr Bartup, during the past year. has been much concerned with research into new costing and accounting systems and has used his own firm as a guinea pig. Sir Robert A. Cary MP will retire from the chairmanship of Lancashire United Transport Ltd on March 31 but will continue as a director of the company. G. F. Davies has been elected chairman to succeed him from April 1.

A. W. Thorburn has been appointed general sales manager of Pitt Trailers Ltd (a Central Wagon Company). Wigan; he joins Pitt from the trailer division of Scammell Lorries Ltd, where he was general sales manager.

G. Brook. chairman of the North Western Region of the NBC, and R. A. Smyrk have been appointed directors of Sheffield United Tours. Mr Smyrk is a consultant to Thomas Cook and Son Ltd, and until his retirement he was assistant general manager of Thomas Cook and Son Ltd.

J. A. Birks, deputy traffic manager of Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co Ltd, has been appointed traffic manager of United Cou nties.

B. L. Rootham, 49, who joined Devon General Omnibus and Touring Co Ltd as traffic manager in February 1969, is to take over as manager on Monday from L. J. Crook, who is retiring. Mr Rootham joined Devon General from Bristol Omnibus.

A. E. Havard has been appointed public relations officer for the Industrial Transport Association; the post is on a part-time basis and to be reviewed after 12 months. It is believed that this is the first appointment of a pro. by a professional transport association.

P. F. Bunning has been appointed distribution manager of DapePak Ltd at Thetford, Norfolk; he was previously transport manager for A. King and Sons Ltd, the steel stockist and metal merchant of Norwich.

Edward Choppen, a managing director of Esso Petroleum Co Ltd since 1963, is to retire on March 30 after 40 years with the company. No successor has yet been named.

Arthur Courten. transport manager of Jones and Shipman Ltd, the Leicester machine tool manufacturer, has retired after 44 years with the firm. He had been in charge of the transport section for over 40 years, starting as a driver.

D. W. Crowfoot has been elected chairman of the Road Haulage Association Leicester sub-area; A. W. Isaacs, R. E. Teear and R. E. Ward are vicechairman; S. A. Holyland is secretary.

J. B. Hempsall has been elected chairman of the Newark sub-area; C. Bird is vice-chairman; F. G. Garrood secretary.

PTA elections

G. L. Steele has been elected chairman of the Industrial Transport Association Forth division: D. Thompson is vice-chairman; R. Gibbins secretary; R. G. Seatt assistant secretary; S. Telfer treasurer. R. Thornton and I. Sherriff are joined by the chairman and secretary as representatives on the national council.
