• Opening the first hearing under the Transport Act 1968 in the North Western traffic area, Mr. C. R. Hodgson, the LA, said that of the 7,300 operators' licence application forms sent out by his office, 1,800 had not been returned. He hoped that those who had not replied would soon do so. The LA also said that some of the margins applied for up to 200 per cent—had been ridiculously high and quite unreasonable. He warned such applicants that the area mechanical engineer would have to visit each base to see if facilities existed to accommodate such increases in fleets.

Among the 0 licences granted, Purle Bros Holdings Ltd. was granted 107 vehicles with a margin of 56; Geoffrey Reyner Ltd, of Droylsden, was granted 61 vehicles with a margin of 45; Waste Clearance Ltd, of Warrington, was granted 27 vehicles with a margin of 16.
