Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Last week company busmen put in a pay rise claim for £2 5s 3d a week on the basic rate of £14 9s 2d for drivers and £14 7s 2d for conductors-17 per cent.

A reply from employers is expected in the next three weeks and meanwhile they will discuss the claim with the TGWU through a working party. Endeavours will be made to keep the final settlement in line with increases agreed recently for municipal crews who submitted a similar claim but accepted nine per cent. This raised drivers' basic wages to £15 17s-5s less for conductors.

The Northampton Corporation drivers' claim for £8 a week to be added to basic rates has been rejected by the union.

London busmen are currently claiming for a £22 a week minimum rate and TGWU national bus secretary Mr Alan Thomson will shortly be holding talks with garage representatives. He said it was likely that an application would be made to London Transport within three weeks.
