• One-day seminars on fleet efficiency, linked in each case with one-day seminars on manpower efficiency, will be held in six cities during the period March to May. These seminars—there are 16 in all—will be organized by Commercial Motor in association with Business and Industrial Training Ltd.

The Fleet Efficiency seminar is based on the successful one-day presentations made under the title Fleet Maintenance in London, Glasgow and Manchester between November and January last. It will examine the relationships between fleet maintenance and the new legislation—such as operators' licensing, plating and testing, and revised prohibition procedures—and give advice on tackling these effectively at minimum cost. This session will be led by Mr Clifford Toyne, assistant chief mechanical engineer, the Ministry of Transport. A second session, led by fleet engineer Michael Hentall, will lay down detailed plans for preventive maintenance with built-in cost and quality controls; it will also take a look at legislation from the engineer's viewpoint.

The second seminar, Manpower Efficiency, is also in two parts. One will deal in detail with the consequences of operators' licensing from both the legal and operational standpoints; this will be led by CM's deputy editor, lain Sherriff. Part two will be led by the director and general manager of Blue Rosette (Transport) Ltd, John Whitcombe (former transport manager of BOC) who will be dealing with the vital questions of training and education in transport, and the probable effects of the proposed system of transport managers' licensing. He will also be examining the. vexed question of levies and grants under

the Industrial Training Act, and where operators stand in relation to their training boards.

The first pair of seminars is in London on March 18 and 19; the others run through to May 14, as shown in the programme published here. The last set of CM seminars was oversubscribed, and intending delegates should make early application to the address shown below, and not to Commercial Motor, please. In completing the application form, seminars should be referred to by the numbers printed alongside the programme (15 to 30).

These seminars have been approved for grant purposes by the Road Transport Industry Training Board, and delegates from companies within RTITB scope will therefore be eligible for application to the Board for training grants towards fees and expenses.
