• A complaint about a shortage of spares for heavy lorries is to be made in the Commons on Monday. Mr Wedgwood Benn, Minister of Technology, is to be asked to ensure that sufficient stocks are available to keep heavy transport vehicles fully serviceable, and to make a statement.

The matter is being raised by Mr Hector Monro, Conservative MP for Dumfries, who is an Opposition whip. He told CM that he had decided to question the Minister as a

result of a weekend conversation with the owner of a medium-size road haulage firm in his constituency.

"He told me of the great difficulty he is experiencing in getting his vehicles through testing stations," said Mr Monro. "He wants to present his fleet as 100 per cent serviceable but finds that he simply cannot get the necessary spares. He was particularly critical of Leylands in this respect."
