• Alarm at the high rate of failures among Men taking the drivers' licence test is expressed by the Scottish Commercial Motormen's Union.
"We are so worried," says the union's official journal The Highway, "that we have asked for a special meeting with Mrs Barbara Castle on the consequences for the men involved.
"In a test period there was an average failure rate recorded by the MoT of one in three men taking the special tests for licences.
"What is also extremely significant is the fact that the success rate is much greater among men who have undergone training for the road transport industry than among those who have literally learned the job 'by the seat of their pants."
The article goes on to state that: "We must also have a mind for the men who are failing the tests—many of them for medical reasons. What happens to them now? Does it mean that if they are declared unfit to drive heavy goods vehicles they are fit to drive the lighter stuff? A lot of these lads have spent a life-time in the industry. . Are they now to be junked? These are the questions we shall be asking Mrs Castle.
"We shall also be dealing with questions of compensation for these men, and to assist them to find other employment."
