Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• West End of London traffic conditions would have to deteriorate far beyond their present level before there was enough incentive for coach passengers on theatre trips to change to public transport, concludes a report published this week. "Charter coaches in Westminster" has been published by Westminster City Council, Victoria St, SW!, after a survey of problems connected with theatre and hotel coach traffic.

The 53-page report, complete with maps, lists some specific points which now need investigation with other bodies. These include the provision of coach parks on the periphery of the West End and the central area; the practicability of reserving space on the street for coach picking-up and setting-down; the re-assessment of coach facilities and general amenities for tourists visiting special attractions such as Westminster Abbey; and the establishment of planning standards for coach facilities in development schemes for new hotels.

Freightliner decision

• A Freightliner depot proposal for Carlisle has been abandoned because of "experience gained in other places", British Railways has told Cumberland County Council. Such a depot is not considered viable because of the amount and type of freight passing through Carlisle.
