An excellent type of wheel for heavy steam and petrol vehicles is that known as the Sentinel, which is made by Alley and MacLellan, Ltd. The centre is of steel, and strong circular oak sections form the felloe, the inner side of which has two coned faces ; the wheel-centre is drawn tight by bolts passing through a sliding felloe ring and the centre. The -felloe can be expanded, as wear occurs, by further closing in the felloe ring.

This represents one of the latest attempts to provide a spring wheel to take the place of the ordinary road wheel fitted with solid or pneumatic tires. It consists of a series of anchored springs and telescopic sleeves, interposed between the felloe and the rim. It is claimed that shocks are taken up by the whole of the springs, and that the resilience is equal to that of the best ordinary types of tires. The whole of the working parts are enclosed.

This company makes a metal disc wheel, on which one plate is firmly attached to the hub, whilst the other can move in any direction within small limits, by reason of a ball-joint construction. The tread is composed of sectional rubber blocks. Both single and twin-type Lynton wheels are manufactured. A special solid-tire is used in conjunction with the Lynton wheel, and is gripped between the rims of the two discs.

One of the best known agents for the supply of the tamous Foden steam wagons is undoubtedly Messrs. G. Scammell and Nephew. It is not Our intention, however, to make mention here of the various agencies held by this firm. We may briefly note and describe shortly, the R.S. patent motor wheel for heavy vehicles, which has given eminently satisfactory results during a series of extended tests under working conditions on the road. The device consists of a cast-steel centre, a wedge ring, and an oak felloe ring, which can be shod either with a steel or solid-rubber tire, as desired. The maker claims that this wheel is resilient, and that it is less noisy and much stronger than the all-steel or artillery wheel.

The Reid-Riekie spring wheel possesses certain adtages which preclude its omission from any notice on wheels for motor vehicles. The construction is extremely clean and simple. A central member and an enter member, with a space between occupied by a number of small helical springs, are the important features incorporated; side flanges locate these main parts in position.

Plant is installed for turning out. 400 complete wheels for three and five-ton motor-driven vehicles weekly, in addition to a large number of wheels for trailers, and 2000 taxicab wheels. A special feature is made of the large stock of timber which is always seasoning in this company's storeyard, which contains wood.' suitable for wheels for almost every conceivable use.

A special section of the Rannoch Street Works has been set aside for the convenience of inventors and manufacturers who are desirous of making and testing novel types of wheels. Many successful productions have in the past been placed upon the market by means of th.e facilities there offered.
