Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BRITISH HAULIERS have around 60 per cent of the market for international accompanied road freight from Britain to Ireland and Europe.

According to the Department of Transport's first annual report on international road haulage registered vehicles, British hauliers carried around 70 per cent (2.4m tonnes) of accompanied traffic out of Britain between July and December last year.

For inward flows, the report says 8.5m tonnes went by ro/ro traffic, and 4.2m tonnes (48 per cent) were carried in accompanied trailers. British vehicles, it says, carried about 50 per cent (2.2m tonnes) ot the total.

The DTp says this greater proportion of the market is due partly to British operators being keener than their foreign competitors to use accompanied trailers, and also to foreign operators' greater preparedness to return home empty.

It is available for £4.50 plus postage from the Department of Transport, Statistics Transport G Division, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 3EB.
