Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• About 400 inspectors and depot staff employed by municipal bus undertakings in the North-East have decided to refuse weekend working from January 4 to secure extra pay for week-end and bank holiday work. At a meeting of the Men t delegates, it was decided not to impose the ban during the Christmas and New Year holidays because it would lose them support among the travelling public.

The National Joint Council for Local Authorities has decided that inspectors and depot staff are not entitled to extra payment, although platform staff receive higher rates for working at week-ends and on bank holidays. Newcastle upon Tyne transport committee is in favour of making an allowance and has urged the National Council to reconsider its decision. Under the proposed ban, the employees will stop work at 1 p.m. on Saturdays until the following Monday morning.
