THE biggest single commercial export consignment ever to be shipped by the Transport Ferry Service was handled last week by the Heavy Haulage Section of B.R.S. (Pick fords), Ltd., and 'British Road Services. It was a 13-ton beer pasteurising machine, en route from Bristol to Rotterdam.

Pickfords provided a 20-ton low-loading trailer and four 15-ton flat trailers, whilst B.R.S. used two 10-ton trailers. These stayed aboard the vessel when she left Tilbury, but all the tractors were driven ashore.

The bulk of the load was made up of four large tanks, eachmore than 19 ft. long, 11 ft. wide and over 8 ft. high. On arrival at Antwerp. Belgian and Dutch transport organizations took over. A huge bottle-cleaner, bound for the same company, was carried by I. Leftley. Ltd., Barking. Part of the consignment was put aboard two low-loaders, owned by a Dutch concern, as a back-load, whilst Leftley's provided two pallets and three standard trailers.

UTILITIES AS BUSES: NEW RULES SOON THE Minister of Transport, Mr. Harold

Watkinson, made it clear in the House of Commons last week that he had not been dissuaded by the passenger transport associations from permitting the use of utilities as buses in rural areas. He said he proposed to make some changes in the Public Service Vehicles (Conditions of Fitness) Regulations as a result of the associations' comments. "I am also considering including amendments to facilitate the use of utility vehicles as rural buses," he said. " I shall issue the consolidated regulations as soon as possible."

RISE IN REGISTRATIONS ,

REGISTRATIONS of new commercial vehicles in October, totalling 18,047, were higher than for either of the preceding two months, As shown in the table below, registrations in the first three quarters of the year, excluding cars and motorcycles, aggregated 169,428.
