Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new test completed by Millbrook Proving Ground has shown that CNG (compressed natural gas) offers fleet operators the most significant environmental advantages over ultralow sulphur diesel used in conjunction with particulate traps.

The test was carried out by Millbn)ok engineers to evaluate the emission levels of two tractor units running over a selected "real world" operating cycle. Results showed the Mobil CNGfuelled vehicle reduced CO by 97%, total hydrocarbons by 81% and NOx by 86%. Particulate matter was cut by 94%.

The diesel test vehicle was fitted with a current Euro-2 engine, while the other unit had a state-of-the-art lean-burn Perkins TxSi natural gas engine and oxidation catalyst. Both usually operate as part of Safeway's distribution fleet.

The gas-powered engine is significantly quieter at low engine speeds. Safeway director Lawrence Christensen says: "This test shows Safeway's move towards CNG-powered vehicles has clear advantages for our environment. We believe the CNG truck is definitely the preferred option for deliveries at night and to noise-sensitive residential areas."

Mobil's Tom Jaworski adds: "We believe CNG offers the UK's commercial fleets the most practical and viable choice of a cleaner fuel for the next millennium."
