THE FREIGHT TRANSPORT Association has warned that future road pricing should be structured in such a way as to encourage CVs to stay on motorways.

The follows a report from the Independent Transport Commission which suggests that road pricing in the form of satellite tracking charging could change where and when motorists drive.

Some vehicles might detour along country lanes to avoid paying extra on major roads. The ETA recently pointed out that the IVI6To1l was heavily under used because of the cost involved, and that recent figures for all traffic had shown a decline.

The government expects the first trial pay-as-you-go scheme to be operating by 2010. Last year it abandoned plans for a Lorry Road User Charging system under which foreign vehicles would have been charged for operating in the UK in a hid to level the playing field.
