THE FIRST major policy review of Britain's directional traffic signing for over 20 years is going ahead, Transport Minister Lynda Chalker has announced.
But any changes will not become fully operational for another 13 years, and there is no plan to include changes in the often confusing unladen and maximum gross weight signs in the review.
Mrs Chalker said: "I am pleased to announce that we have set up a review which will not only seek ways of improving signs for tourists, but also of improving the information on all directional route signs.
The 13-year delay is because the review will take up to three years and then traffic signs will have to last their full 10-year life-span for economic reasons, the DTp said.
The growing need to provide clear signing to tourist attractions and various types of ser vices, ways of improving directional route information for driver and easier identification of through routes will be considered.
The Freight Transport Association welcomed the Government's review. Director of planning and information Richard Turner said: "More reliable information for lorry drivers should be given on the signs, so that they can ue aware of any obstacles they may face."
