Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE formation of a North Devon branch of the Road Haulage Association was the outcome of a wellattended meeting of hauliers at Barnstaple, last Saturday. Mr. C. Hodgson (St. Austell), chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Area, presided, and was supported by Mr. Humphrey Cooke (St. Austell), area honorary secretary, Mr. R. S. Anderson; organizer, and Messrs. J. Crews and F. T. Clarke, chairman and honorary secretary respectively of the Exeter District Association.

We shall never restore the former rates until we have co-operation and

co-ordination," said Mr. Hodgson. "We I ope, next year, to do something about the ridiculous rates offered by county

councils." •

Mr. Cooke said that there were now 200 members in Cornwall and 100 in Devon. lie urged Barnstaple operators tb prepare a schedule of rai,es, abide by it and report to the Traffic Commissioners any haulier who was proved to lave deviated from it.

A North Devon haulier stated that e was doing county courcil work at 18s. per day. He had a 2-ton lorry and was paying a .driver £2 5s. a week. Mr. Hodgson said that the Association could not do much about county council rates until wages were stabilized, but the Wages Board was quickly . "getting down" to the problem. Then rate-cutting would be tackled ; a start on this problem had already been made in Cornwall, where a progressive organization has been established.

The majority of those present enrolled as members of the R.H.A. Mr. F. H. Bradford, of the North Devon Ice and Cold Storage Co., Barnstaple, was appointed chairman of the new branch, and Mr. P. A. Miller, of Messrs. A. Miller and Son, Braunton, -was elected honorary secretary.-.
