Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

brought into force this year about vehicle headlamps and rear lamps. Could you tell me when these regulations apply and also give details of them?

ATwo sets of regulations concerning head

lamps have become operative this year. Firstly, from January 1 1969 all mechanically propelled vehicles on unlit public roads after darkness—officially half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise—must use headlamps if they are fitted. Single spot or fog lights may be used in fog or falling snow until January 1 1970, but from then onwards vehicles will have to show two fog/spot lights unless the headlamps are kept illuminated.

The other regulations effective from April 1 1969 are concerned with the provision of two headlamps on most four-wheel vehicles (exceptions are electric vehicles (see 0 and A page CM July 4) and agricultural implements and land tractors, etc).

The regulations stipulate that both headlamps must be illuminated together and dipping devices which extinguish the offside beam leaving the nearside lamp illuminated are now illegal.

Here is an illustration, which the SR PTA has fecently circulated, showing combinations of lamps permitted: used in pairs, one on either side of the vehicle and fitted at similar heights to avoid other road users getting the impression that the vehicle is a motorcycle.
