A. A. HAMPSON RESIGNS GENERAL MANAGERSHIP

• The British Leyland members of the board of directors of the new Leyland National Co. Ltd. (CM July 18) were named last week, together with the new board for Bristol Commercial Vehicles Ltd., now jointly owned by British Leyland and the National Bus Company. Mr. R. Ellis, managing director of BLMC truck and bus division, and chairman of Leyland National, has been appointed chairman of BCV.

Coinciding with this announcement was the news that Mr. A. A. Hampson, director and general manager of Bristol Commercial Vehicles, had resigned. He is replaced by Mr. T. R. Nicoll, with the new title of executive director and general manager. Mr. Nicoll was previously general manager of BLMC subsidiary Self Changing Gears Ltd., Coventry.

A spokesman for BCV told CM that Mr. Hampson had had a long discussion with Mr. Ellis about the future of Bristol. He could not accept the plans put forward by Mr. Ellis, and resigned immediately.

This development followed shortly after a visit to BCV of Mr. Anthony Wedgwood Benn, Minister of Technology, who assured workers that Bristol would play a prominent part in the future production of British-built buses and that concentration of doubledecker bus chassis production would be transferred to the BCV factory. This development was described by Lord Stokes at the time of the Leyland National announcement.

, The full boards of Leyland National and Bristol Commercial Vehicles are now as follows: Leyland National: Mr. R. Ellis (chairman); Mr. T. W. H. Gailey, chief executive, National Bus Company; Mr. G. McKay, executive director, NBC; Mr. G. Neely, chief financial officer, NBC: Mr. B. Shepherd, marketing director, BLMC truck and

bus division; and Mr. G. A. Wright, financial controller, BLMC truck and bus division.

The executive director and general mannager of Leyland National will be Mr. M. T. Smith, previously deputy general manager of Leyland Motors Ltd.

Bristol Commercial Vehicles: same board as above, apart from Mr. M. T. Smith. in place of Mr. Shepherd. The Eastern Coach Works board is similar to the BCV board, with Mr. R. E. Sugden remaining as executive director and general manager.

Lord Stokes and Mr. Norman Todd (chairman of NBC) have stated that they feel that this new grouping of the bus manufacturing facilities of British Leyland and NBC will provide a bridgehead for creating further world markets and improving the design and development of passenger vehicles in the future.
