Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• From today, the Freight Transport Association is extending its maintenance inspection service to cover four new classes. They are: the inspection of new vehicles; the inspection of second-hand vehicles; accident repair or major overhaul inspection; and investigation of recurring faults.

Inspection of new vehicles on delivery is being offered as a specific service following experience under the normal quarterly inspection scheme; for example, hidden faults detected before the end of the warranty period have saved operators money.

On second-hand vehicles, FTA inspectors will provide a report covering the general condition, suitability for the proposed use, and the likely cost of necessary repairs. Advice will also be given on the possible need for deeper investigation before purchase.

After accident repairs or major overhauls the inspectors will provide an independent check that all faults have been correctly attended to.

The fourth category will involve an independent opinion being given after detailed examination of the cause for repeated trouble, over which there may be conflicting views.

Charges for all four services will be negotiated on the basis of time and expense involved. The FTA will continue to offer its quarterly contract and pre-MoT test inspection schemes, which are currently being carried out on over 11,600 vehicles.
