R.E. OPPOSES HAULIER IT ENGAGES •

THE Railway Executive recently opposed an application for a B licence by Mr. F. Holt, Islington, London, N.1, an operator to whom the railways had passed work on several occasions.

Mr. Holt explained to the Metropolitan Licensing Authority that he wished to replace some of his horsed vehicles. With one exception he and his father had been serving the same customers for many years. The railways, whose own men refused to handle the traffic, wished him to deliver hides and had seemingly felt it useless to employ British Road Services.

Mr. Ralph Cropper represented Mr. Holt. The licence was granted.

Production continued at a high level, although in the autumn of last year there was some slackening of pace because of a seasonal reduction in demand. "The seasonal nature of the company's industry, which existed before the war, is again manifest and to some extent has probably to be regarded as part of the natural course of events . and inevitable," commented Mr. White.
