M.P.s CROSS SWORDS ON DENATIONALIZATION

THE growth of C licences since 1948 was a reflection of the dissatisfaction felt by industry towards British Road Services, said Mr. J. R. Bevins, M.P., at the first meeting in the 195253 session of the Manchester Area of the Institute of Traffic Administration. He set out to prove that denationalization would not burden the taxpayer and that privately owned road transport would aid British industry.

Replying. Mr. Will Nally, M.P., explained that the low profits Shown on the B.R.S. balance sheets for the period 1948-51 were in the main caused by the war. Between 1939 and 1945, hauliers made little or no capital expenditure and sooner or later new vehicles and equipment had to be purchased. This task fell upon B.R.S.

" Who is going to buy the vehicles which will be put up for sale—the exServiceman or a , great combine, such as Littlewoods or Pickfords? I suggest that there is no such thing as private enterprise," Mr. Nally declared.

. The Government of Mysore has decided to take, for the State road transport department, the monopoly on six bus routes radiating from Bangalore, with effect from October 1.
